Theresa May Brexit Agreement Summary

The approval of the Withdrawal Agreement by the British Parliament was one of the necessary conditions for the entry into force of its conditions. Without it, the standard legal position was that the UK would leave the European Union without a deal. The Withdrawal Agreement sets out the conditions for a transition period after the UK`s withdrawal from the bloc, while long-term agreements are negotiated. It would have to wait until the end of 2020, but could be extended by two years. The Northern Ireland Protocol, known as the “Irish backstop”, was an annex to the November 2018 draft agreement outlining provisions to avoid a hard border in Ireland after the United Kingdom`s withdrawal from the European Union. The Protocol contained a safety net provision to deal with circumstances in which satisfactory alternative arrangements have yet to enter into force at the end of the transitional period.
